A night after losing by 29, the Dodge City Conquistadors women’s basketball team willed itself to a victory Saturday night against Lamar, and did so with every bit the same force by which they had lost the night before.

The Conquistadors beat Lamar 77-42.

“It all came down to really just pride and playing hard, and I didn’t feel like we played with a lot of pride (Friday) night,” Loll said. “We had moments where we played hard, but it wasn’t a consistent effort and we didn’t have intensity, heart, effort, toughness (Friday) night.”

Going into Saturday’s game, those were the only things the team talked about, Loll said.

“It wasn’t who they had, it was about really playing against ourselves, and they responded,” Loll said.

It would have been real easy, Loll said, for the team to have felt bad for itself after Friday’s defeat, but instead, the team didn’t.

“I think they had some embarrassment the way they came out and played and knew they had to play better,” Loll said. “We’re not talented enough that we’re just going to overpower people but if we play together, and when I say ‘together’ it’s not just the five that are on the floor, it’s the 13 of us that we have, play together and everybody just does their little part, then we’re going to be a hard team to match up against and play against every night.”

Saturday’s effort was far from a perfect game for the Conqs, who had their share of missed shots and who made their share of miscommunications and erroneous passes, but in the end the Conqs used strong second, third and fourth-quarter performances to seal the win.

They only led 12-11 at the end of the first.

Whatever Loll told the team after it apparently worked. The Conqs outscored Lamar 27-12 in the second quarter, 17-9 in the third, and 21-10 in the fourth.

“We got some good stuff going on,” Loll said. “We were getting what we wanted to do, it was just keeping the pressure on them.”

The Conquistadors head to Moberly, Missouri Friday and Saturday for games against Moberly Area Community College and State Fair Community College before taking on Independence in Independence Nov. 28. They return home Dec. 1 when they play Neosho. Gametime that day is scheduled for 1 p.m.
