A 38-year-old Pratt man died Wednesday, about a week after he was shot while exchanging gunfire with police officers, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation said.

Rene Prieto died in the Wichita hospital where he had been treated since the Nov. 13 shooting, according to a KBI news release.

The KBI said an autopsy will be conducted.

The shooting occurred after Pratt police officers responded about 3:45 p.m. Nov. 13 to a report of a man on the street waving a gun, authorities previously said.

Officers responded to 512 N. Main St., where they found an armed man outside the residence. When officers approached, Prieto fired at one of them, and three officers returned fire, wounding Prieto, the KBI said.

Authorities said officers secured Prieto and called for an ambulance.

None of the police officers was injured in the shooting.

The KBI continues to investigate.
