A rural Salina man avoided being scammed after receiving a money order from an unknown source in his mail Saturday, according to a report by Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan.

The 77-year-old man, who lives on Woodward Road, received a money order for $1,000 with instructions telling him he had been selected to be a "secret shopper." All he had to do was purchase $800 worth of gift cards, take photos of the cards and email the photos to an address supplied on the note. He could keep the remaining $200 for himself.

Soldan said the man recognized it was a scam and contacted the Sheriff's Office. Soldan reminded people to continue to be on the lookout for potential scam attempts, especially during the upcoming holiday season.
